Tradition aided by technology.
This is the first known time the time-honoured technique of marbling, usually reserved for application on paper (for book linings as an example), is used for textiles and clothing. The Ebru technique creates motifs when oil-based inks diffuse on a water surface and are transferred to paper.
It took perseverance for the Dries Van Noten design team to find a master artist of this technique willing to take up the challenge of transferring the method to textiles. Three hundred unique impressions were created over days at his London atelier.
The idea for the finale of the fashion show was sparked on seeing all three hundred marbling impressions as they all lay together on the atelier floor. Each of these unique, vivid and vibrant marble print coats was one of the impressive line of 56 that finished the show.
